Tick’s checklist

The rules Tick checks.

  • Email and city at the top

  • Plain section headings

  • One page, or two after 10 years

  • A short summary, or none

  • Dates on every role

  • No unexplained gaps

  • Bullets start with a past-tense verb

  • Each bullet names a result

  • A number in the top half

  • No “I”, “me” or “my”

  • No buzzwords

The rules Tick checks

Plain rules a reader notices in the first look. Tick checks each one in your browser and tells you the fix.

  • Has words a computer can read

If Tick can’t read the words, hiring software may not either.

  • Email and city at the top

The person who likes it needs to reach you and know where you’re based.

  • Plain section headings

Plain headings let a reader find your experience in seconds.

  • One page, or two after 10 years

Every extra page is more for a busy reader to skim past.

  • A short summary, or none

A long summary pushes your experience down the page.

  • Dates on every role

Dates show how long you did each job. Without them, a reader guesses.

  • No unexplained gaps

One plain line answers the question before anyone asks it.

  • Bullets start with a past-tense verb

Starting with what you did keeps each line about your work.

  • Each bullet names a result

A result shows what changed because you were there.

  • A number in the top half

A number near the top gives a quick reader something concrete.

  • No “I”, “me” or “my”

A resume is already about you. Dropping “I” leaves room for the work.

  • No buzzwords

Readers skim past these. A result says the same thing and proves it.

The numbers behind the rules

  • Length: one page with under 10 years of work, two after that. A PDF’s pages are counted; pasted text counts about 750 words a page.
  • Summary: 3 lines or fewer, at about 18 words a line.
  • Gaps: 6 months or more between roles that no other date on the resume covers. Time since your last role doesn’t count.
  • Buzzwords: the words Day60’s tailored resumes never use, unless the posting uses them.
